How to Get Enough Protein When Your Appetite Is Small

GLP-1 medications work partly by quieting your appetite — which is the point. But your body's need for protein doesn't shrink along with your hunger. Here's how people manage both.

Why protein matters more, not less

When you lose weight, your body can lose muscle along with fat — and muscle is what keeps your metabolism, strength and balance healthy. Protein is the raw material your body uses to hold onto that muscle. Many clinicians who work with GLP-1 patients talk about protein as the single most important nutrient to protect during weight loss, precisely because eating less overall makes it easy to accidentally eat too little of it.

How much do you personally need? That depends on your body, your medication and your health — it's a question for your own clinician or dietitian. What follows is about strategy, not targets.

The protein-first rule

The most useful habit is also the simplest: at every meal, eat the protein first. When your appetite runs out halfway through a plate — a common GLP-1 experience — whatever you ate first is what your body got. Protein first, vegetables and sides after, means a half-finished meal still did its most important job.

Small and often beats big and rare

Three large meals can feel impossible when your appetite is quiet and your stomach empties slowly. Most people do better with smaller amounts spread across the day:

Liquids can be easier than solids

On days when solid food feels like too much, liquid protein often goes down more easily — it doesn't sit as heavily, and it counts toward hydration too. This is one reason lighter, juice-style protein drinks have become popular with GLP-1 users who can't face a thick shake.

A gentle note: if you're consistently unable to eat, feeling unwell, or losing weight faster than your clinician expects, that's a conversation for your care team — not something to push through. This post is general education, not medical advice.
